Gum disease is a swelling of the gums that can progress to the point where it affects the bone that surrounds your teeth. It’s caused by the bacteria in plaque, which is the colorless, sticky film that continually forms on your teeth. If the plaque is not removed through daily brushing and flossing, it builds up and the bacteria will infect not only your gums and teeth, but eventually the tissue and bone that support your teeth. This can cause your teeth to become loose, fall out or have to be removed by a dentist. Our Holland general dentist, Dr. Michael E. Meyer, encourages you to schedule regular checkups so that early stage gum disease can be treated before it leads to a much more serious condition.
Dental Exams Holland
Our well-trained team will first welcome you to our state-of-the-art facility and make sure you’re comfortable and know what to expect. Our Holland general dentist will take your medical history to find out any past or present periodontal problems and any medications you are presently taking. Dr. Meyer will note the present state of your oral hygiene and discuss the form of dental care you are practicing at home. Your gum area will be examined as there are several conditions that would indicate gum disease. Our dentist will check for any discoloration of tissue on the inside of the cheeks and tongue, and sides of the teeth, as well as any inflammation, redness or bleeding.
Periodontitis, one stage of gum disease, is where the supporting bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place are permanently damaged and your gums may begin to form a pocket below the gum line, which traps food and plaque. If gum disease is suspected, a painless procedure called Periodontal Screening and Recording (PSR) will be done to establish the level of gum disease. This simple procedure, performed by Dr. Meyer, uses a mirror and “periodontal probe” that measures the depth of the pockets. Pocket depths more than 3mm indicate gum disease. Our Holland general dentist will also test for tooth movement since any movement detected suggests some degree of bone support loss. For a proper diagnosis, a full mouth series of 18 X-rays will be taken to confirm any loss of bone structure supporting your teeth so the appropriate treatment can be discussed. Dedicated to each patient’s overall health and oral well-being, our Holland general dentist and well-educated staff at Lakeside Smiles, will keep you calm and well-informed throughout all procedures.
Everybody loves a bright white smile, and there are a variety of products and procedures at Lakeside Smiles available to help you improve the look of yours. Professional teeth whitening by our Holland cosmetic dentists at Lakeside Smiles is your best choice when you need immediate whitening results. This procedure is called chairside bleaching. During chairside bleaching, our Holland Cosmetic Dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect the oral soft tissues. A bleaching agent is then applied to your teeth and a special light is used to enhance the action of the agent.
Holland General Dentist
Some patients prefer to do the whitening in the privacy of their own home and here at Lakeside Dental we do offer several types of safe, effective products for use at home which can be dispensed by our Holland Cosmetic Dentist. They are generally teeth whitening trays, strips, or paint-on products. These products contain peroxide(s) which actually bleach the tooth enamel, eliminating pesky surface stains. Peroxide-containing whiteners come in a gel and are placed in teeth whitening trays. Some products are used twice a day for 2 weeks, while others are intended for overnight use for 1-2 weeks. At Lakeside Smiles, we will make a custom-fitted teeth whitening tray for you that will fit your teeth precisely. On the other hand, teeth whitening strips, which are available in your local pharmacy, are thin, flexible plastic strips containing a thin film of hydrogen peroxide bleaching on one side. Whitening strip kits often come with two types of strips: one for the upper teeth and one for the lower teeth. The bleaching agent is applied by placing the strips over your teeth and gently pressing the strips into place to make sure there is total contact with all your teeth. Teeth whitening strips are typically worn for 30 minutes a day, twice a day and the duration of treatment will vary.
Another option is paint-on teeth whitening which allows you to apply a bleaching agent directly to your teeth without a tray or strip. You simply “paint” the whitener onto the surface of clean, dry teeth and wait about 30 minutes while the paint turns to a dry film. To remove this film, you simply brush your teeth with a toothbrush. Paint-on whitening products require twice-daily applications to be effective. The duration of treatment will vary. An advantage in this process is that you can selectively paint individual teeth. If you decide you would like to go beyond regular care to make your smile even brighter, you should investigate all of your options with the Holland cosmetic dentists at Lakeside Smiles.
